Alright, here we go… I started a YouTube page.
This is something I’ve been thinking about for a couple of years, but I kept letting fear get in the way. I’d talk myself out of it or find some excuse not to start. But now feels like the right time.
Below, I’ll share a little bit about what I want this channel to be (at least for now) and what my plans are over the next few weeks. But first, here’s an image I took recently that I’ve really been enjoying…
What’s The Channel Even About?
I’m so glad you asked… My goals for this channel, really, is to talk about and show you my life as a creative person struggling to even think of myself as a creative person. I will be taking you on photo walks with me while talking to myself in public like a crazy person. I’ll narrate my process all for the benefit of you and maybe a little for myself too… I will also be printing out some of my work to sit down and chat about what these photos mean to me, what I think I could improve on and also sharing my stories behind these photos.
I know I’m saying “I” or "me” a lot but this channel really is going to be about sharing my experiences in hopes that you can learn from my struggles. I’m not in the business of telling you the “top ten tips on how to be a better street photographer!” I’m more interested in showing you real life examples with authentic stories behind those examples.
What Kind Of Videos Can We Expect?
This is going to depend on the day or week.. but some of my plans are listed below.
Talking Head
These types of videos are going to be a conversation where I just sit down and hit record. I will be talking about anything that comes to mind from the creative process, sharing other photographers’ work and what I feel when I look at it, ranting about life on the road, or anything else I can think of.
Hotel and Prints
For the ‘Hotel and Prints’ project (Working Title suggestions needed), I’m going to be printing out some of my work while I’m out on the road doing my day job. Those prints could be of the location I’m in or a past trip I took. I think it’s very important for us as photographers to print our work and look at it on paper. During these videos I will talk about the stories behind the work, share more details about how I edited it or what I was thinking during the time I was taking the photo, as well as the post process part of the image.
POV Photo Walks
These are exactly as they sound, nothing new here. Just a classic photography POV video. I will try to think of ways to make them feel fresh and different, but for the most part it will be me walking a location taking photos and talking to you all as I do it.
TOP TEN TIPS!
I’m joking….
Gear Videos
I might not be giving you sweet photography tips, but I will be talking about some gear I love!
Share The Damn Thing!
Ok fine here you go!
That’s All Folks
So thats it… I’m super excited to share this with you all and also very nervous. Hopefully you will all have a look and give me feedback. The community I’ve grown here on Substack is honestly the best community I’ve had anywhere and for that i’m grateful. I genuinely look for your feedback and take it to heart. If you end up enjoying it please consider subscribing to the channel and watch it grow based on advice I get from you all.
Thank you all for the support you rock!
Good luck with your YouTube channel, Joshua, I'll definitely be taking a look. I'm actively trying to throttle back on the amount of YouTube I consume as, for me, there is way too much 'gear influencer' content masquerading as photography 'advice'.
I really like your comment on 'Top Tens'. I understand the need to grow an audience (particularly when YT is intended to be an income stream) but clickbait - whether overt or even partially concealed - results in me unfollowing the channel. Quite a few have bit the dust in the last couple of weeks and more will follow.
Gear is interesting when the YouTuber discovers a real 'hidden gem' of advice which isn't in the user manual. I may be wrong but I suspect that those of us who have been taking photographs for many years are looking more for inspiration and insightful / original thought more than the 'best' lens to use for street photography!
Very best wishes.
