This was so brilliant and so relatable Josh! Thank you! This might sound silly or unbelievable but I actually don’t get very much time to shoot just for me because I’m always shooting for work (which I enjoy) or for YouTube which I also enjoy but it’s not the same as just doing it casually for no specific reason…so these tips are so welcome and I appreciate the reminders. Also love that pic of the guy in the airport. Primo 👌🏻

Doesn’t sound silly at all. When I was writing this, I was also thinking about that and how even having a career that involves photography, how much time do you actually get to go out and shoot just for yourself? I’m glad you enjoyed the read and the airport photo.

Great read Joshua. All to often we fall into the trap of thinking that traveling to some far flung exotic location is the answer when what we really need to do is carry our camera to the dry cleaners or grocery store.

100% Tom! Always having your creative tool with you can lead to some unexpected surprises. Thank you for the read and also the restack.

You’re a better man than me, Josh. I ended up taking the advice in paragraph five. Except it was Mexico not Argentina. 😊 Nice post! 👍🏻

This is so relatable, it it's so easy to run dry in the daily rut.

Back in the mandatory office days I was cursing my situation and blamed my lack of creative energies on me being in the same boring environment every day.

Now that I get to travel with work and in my free time, I don't think the ability of being somewhere else solves the problem. Sure, it does help some, but overall from a creative perspective I learned what to look for in my everyday life.

100% agree with the "taking your camera everywhere" part. I'm still on the look for a great compact.

Thanks!

"When I’m walking to the venue from the hotel, my camera is in hand. When I’m leaving for the day, the first thing I do is put on my wrist strap and grab my camera. Even when I’m going out to dinner with co-workers—yep, camera in hand. I’m 1000% sure I annoy the hell out of some people I work with, but that’s not my concern. My concern is taking photos." 🎯 THE 📷 Way to 🧘🏻‍♀️💫🧿

Working in a clerical profession on a "9-5" for 43 years was as much as I could manage and I literally had to retire. I enjoyed my work, worked with great people and at some great companies but I realised, eventually, that enough was enough. The reality is that we seldom have a real "9-5" role and, for much of our careers, the days are a LOT longer and switching off properly to make the most of weekends and holidays are rare. Sometimes the concept of a work / life balance split, as shown in the TV series "Severance", almost makes sense....😱

Very well said, Paul. I hope you’ve found more time in retirement to enjoy some other things!

Photography's been my passion / hobby for the last 50 years, Joshua. I'm slowly coming to terms with the fact that I need to make time to create more project-based work and have just joined The RAW Society. I'm aiming to post on Substack and link back to The RAW Society's hub - once I work out how to do that..!

Thanks, Tom. I’ve been a photographer for 50 years but I’m new to The RAW Society and even newer to Substack….! I’m hoping I’ll fathom out how to post an intro his weekend and then start posting more freely once I get the hang of it.

Small wins are so important when you have a ‘day job’! Also start substack to have a focus every week - that’s what I did… nice post

Loved this article Josh as well as how you write in general! And yes, every small win counts. Life (or perhaps happiness) is about the small wins and acknowledging them.

I'm sure this struggle will be recognisable to many! Great read, Joshua, I really love your examples of how you can squeeze in a little photography even into the smallest windows of time. Having a Ricoh GR in your pocket certainly helps, too :)

I definitely agree about the Ricoh! It has saved me so many times. I think I could write a book on this subject, honestly, as it’s something I struggle with daily. Glad you enjoyed the read and thank you for the continued support.
